SUMMARY:Exhibition of the month -June
DESCRIPTION:\n\nExhibition of the month &amp\; First Thursday\n\n"SUTURE" i
n aid for the Karina Narian Foundation | June 2024\nAF du Cap\, 155 Loop
Street\n\nWelcome to "Suture" : an extraordinary group exhibition that use
s multidisciplinary art to drive home a bold message of awareness\, empowe
rment\, resilience\, and hope. Inspired by and dedicated to breast cancer
survivors\, the exhibition treads the lines between trauma and triumph\, g
iving an unprecedentedly vulnerable look behind the veil of the harsh jour
ney that encompasses breast cancer\, from diagnosis\, through treatment an
d ongoing into survivorship.\n\nFrom June 6th to July 2nd\, the gallery sp
ace at Alliance Française du Cap transforms into a sanctuary of compassio
nate sharing and a call to action for all. Through the provocative works o
 f participating artists Christiaan Beyers\, Deeva Merwe\, Ilené Bothma\,
and Karina Narian\, "Suture" offers a multifaceted exploration of the brea
st cancer and survivorship journey. Each artist brings a unique perspectiv
e\, weaving together contrasting narratives of struggle and surrender\, di
sfigurement and transformation.\n\nKarina Narian's work captures the chall
enges\, the complex emotions\, and the lessons of surviving cancer. Having
lost her mother to breast cancer\, and as a survivor herself\, she aims t
o heal\, connect\, inspire resilience\, and support those battling the dis
ease. Karina’s photographs of breast cancer and mastectomy survivors off
er an honest\, empathetic and true portrait of the parts of survival that
 we don’t often look at.\n\nIlené Bothma’s portrait of a survivor\, an
d visceral ceramic works depict broad themes of femininity\, decay\, and r
econstruction\, showcasing the beauty in scars and urging the viewer to re
flect on themes of great loss and grief\, and hopefully\, in time\, the in
evitable acceptance of a new normal.\n\nDeeva and Christiaan’s photograp
hy explores the beauty that emerges after the complexities of treatments a
nd surgery. By painting with light and exploring the performance of self\,
they create a playground in which Tahira can embrace both her vulnerabili
ties and her bravery. The resulting portraits tell a story of self-reclama
tion and\, ultimately\, healing.\n\n"Suture" is more than just an exhibiti
on—it's an urgent call to witness the arduous journey breast cancer pres
ents to so many women\, and celebrating the resurrection and renewal that
is possible beyond it. On First Thursday June 6th\, please join us at 6pm
for the opening of this meaningful exhibition\, where we will come togethe
r as a community to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and support.\n
\nTogether\, we can reach more women\, encouraging them to take the simple
steps to look after their own health\, and grow access to many resources
beyond the purely medical\, that survivors need to thrive. In the face of
adversity\, we find strength. In the depths of darkness\, we discover ligh
 t. "Suture" is a celebration of the human spirit's indomitable will to per
severe\, and we invite you to join us on this journey of healing and hope.
