The collection of artworks in the Flotsam – exhibition, are a selection of pieces from various exhibitions that have remained in my private collection, and a couple of pieces created this year.
Artworks in a very real sense are the creative wreckage of an artists’ life. The remnants of an insatiable imagination and an irresistible and inexorable need to make – anything – all of the time.
To dispassionately dismember and identify the “specifics” of why and with what goal in mind, an artwork is created by an artist – is paramount to describing moonlight to a daisy. A blank canvas or blank piece of paper, to artist is never a clean slate.
For me there is an expressive predestination to all artworks – as if they were always and inevitably lurking within the periphery of my mind. I only need to tease it from the creative outer limits into being. One only need to let the artwork emerge from the depths and float.
As an artist, I have always considered my artworks to be visual narrations, be it sometimes written in a symbology without rhyme or reason.
Beyond the religiosity in my work, my art has always been informed and shaped by the female experience. My artworks are quintessentially and unapologetically feminine. Using mediums and materials associated historically with women like wool fibre, connect me in a tactile and visceral manner to my sex and gender. The female impulse is to nurture, to indulge and to cherish. The Feminine coddle, the Masculine conquer.
Opening: 6pm – 8.30pm
Monday – Friday: 10am – 5.45pm
