A collaborative exhibition by Shui-lyn White and Kevan Moses.

No halo No crown asks us to consider a world without judgement or hierarchy and at the same time to consider the damage inflicted by the acceptance of beliefs and ideas that create and support social systems based on a moral right to power.

A moral right symbolised by halos and crowns. Historically, these were conferred by a deity, bestowing the powers of status, judgement, superiority, authority, and above all, the unquestionable power to rule over others. The systems and mind sets produced by this are with us today, embedded in patriarchy and privilege; in dictatorship and autocracy; in cancel culture and fake news; in corruption and censorship; the hierarchy of supremacy in gender, race and religion.

No halo No crown is look at the broad political impact of hierarchies, the belief in belonging which supports them, and the impact on the development of individual potential and freedom. How to be ‘one’s true self’ in systems that seek to define the self through imposed norms that describe who can and cannot belong and benefit? This also questions the dangers of accepting the social mores inherent in ‘halos and crowns’ and the acquiescence to its biases; and the enormous cost of obedience and observation to power.

Exhibition from 6 April to 2 May.
