Humanity’s self-delusion

Dr Paulo de Valdoleiros MBChB is a Cape Town based medical doctor specializing in personalized functional medicine, with a focus on steroid hormone modulation. From 2017 to 2023, he was a regular expert guest on South Africa’s top TV show Real health, contributing to over 100 episodes. He has also written widely, including contributions to the South African GP journal, where he published a series on menopause.

Known by some as the “angel doctor,” he gained attention for running a pay-what-you-can primary healthcare practice in Bloemfontein between 2019 and 2020, which led to significant media coverage.

In 2022, he began creating abstract acrylic artworks, which were later printed onto fabric. At The Old Biscuit Mill, Life and Death gallery presents a new body of work by Dr Paulo de Valdoleiros in collaboration with fashion designer Calista Graham, transforming his original art into wearable pieces.

His work reflects on the quiet tension between what we try to conceal and what inevitably surfaces. It draws from the instinct to cover, layer, and repaint the parts of ourselves we wish could be erased, only to find they remain, shaping the final image in unexpected ways.

This collection explores that persistence: the unseen layers, the unintended blends, and the fractures where truth breaks through. Through abstract forms and wearable pieces, the work speaks to vulnerability, memory, and the limits of our own making.

It is an invitation to look closer to what lies beneath, to what we carry, and to what cannot be painted over.

Join us for an intimate evening and step into this evolving dialogue between art, fashion, and the human condition.
