We are happy to announce our June exhibition: Anaphora / Anaphore by Patrick Tankama.

About the artist:

As a visual artist, Patrick Tankama’s work is informed by architecture, object design, the world of fashion, illustration and pin-up art. His intricately multi-layered creative processes, revolve around anaphora, metaphor and hyperbola among many other subtle ingredients.

Anaphora, through the recurring presence of towering characters, often drawn from behind and from a low-angle shot.

Metaphor, through an aesthetic re-configuration of human and its essence that embodies the “otherly” anatomy and hyperbola, through the use of perspectives, at time aesthetically stretched, and unconventional posture.

Female bodies that he represents, carry a symbolic degree : they refer to “the eternal feminine”, in other words the archetype of desirable female, perhaps best represented today by the seductive socialite, TikTok or Instagram users.

On a more personal level, shall we say autobiographical, the characters he creates, often erected vertically, seem to stem from the pipes (chimneys) from Lubumbashi’s metallurgical plants, phallic symbol from the mining zone where he was born.

Aesthetically it evokes androgynous entities, or at least they are potentially.

Tankama has a penchant for minimalist and uncluttered backgrounds that he uses as backdrops against which the bodies stand out like a 2-D sculptural representation.
