Step into a deeply intimate photographic journey that honours identity, heritage, and the lived realities of Cape Town’s coloured community. DIE BRUIN MENSE, a documentary exhibition by South African photographer and filmmaker Melany Ismail, offers a powerful, personal response to the underrepresentation of her culture in mainstream media.

Born and raised in Cape Town, Melany documents her community with tenderness and truth, stripping away pretence to reveal dignity, emotion, and everyday humanity. Her mindful aesthetic challenges stereotypes, uplifts narratives too often overlooked, and restores visibility to a people whose history is rooted in resilience and pride.

Through each portrait, Melany invites viewers into spaces shaped by memory, displacement, perseverance, and cultural strength a heartfelt tribute to a community reclaiming its voice.
