Talk: Institutional Redress
How can museums and cultural institutions move beyond symbolic gestures and contribute to genuine transformation?
As part of the HEAT Winter Arts Festival 2026, this panel discussion examines the role of public institutions in processes of cultural repair and redress. Drawing on questions of colonial heritage, archives, representation and inherited power structures, the conversation will explore how museums can help reshape public memory and create meaningful institutional change.
The discussion brings together Andrea Lewis, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Iziko South African National Gallery, and Carmen Joubert, Curator at the Norval Foundation. Both will share insights from their work with collections, exhibitions, heritage and public audiences.
